POM C, a technopolymer with high mechanical parameters and a very low coefficient of friction, was chosen as the piston material because it is self-lubricating. The gearing is presented with a second missing tooth and with the third already reduced by 3 tenths of a millimetre, as this configuration predisposes the piston itself to the correct angle of engagement (AOE) and makes it suitable for high speeds. The type of metal injected is SAE 4650, which is currently considered to be the best material on the market for this type of application. The slip lines are designed to minimize friction and retain lubricant over the long term. The gear arrangement is decentralised to give priority to the connection between the piston teeth and the sector gear teeth. Longitudinal stiffeners on the sides of the teeth increase the robustness of the piston and prevent the gear from contacting the inner wall of the cylinder. Special ribs reduce the contact area between the spring and the inner part of the piston body, and consequently the friction between the metal and the technopolymer during contraction and elongation due to the firing cycle is also reduced.
